Rolled over a chunk of my 401k to a Gold IRA - My experience & curious about yours
- •Finally pulled the trigger and moved a good portion of my 401k into a Gold IRA.

Finally pulled the trigger and moved a good portion of my 401k into a Gold IRA. Been thinking about it for a while, especially with all the market volatility and just generally feeling like the dollar isn't as solid as it used to be. I run a logistics company here in Memphis, and I'm starting to think about succession planning in the next 5-7 years, so capital preservation is becoming a much bigger deal for me than growth at all costs.
I ended up rolling over about $250k from an old 401k that was just sitting there, fully vested from a previous gig. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward, at least from the gold IRA company's side. They handled most of the paperwork, which was a huge relief. The longest part was actually getting my old 401k administrator to release the funds and send the check. Took a couple of calls and some gentle nudging, but it got done. My main concern going in was fees, but after talking to a few different places, I found one that felt reasonable for storage and administration.
It's a weird feeling, having a significant chunk of my retirement in physical precious metals. On one hand, I feel a lot more secure against inflation and potential economic downturns. On the other, it's not something I'm used to seeing on a statement fluctuate daily like stocks. I actually used that Gold IRA Calculator over on Gold IRA Blueprint to get a rough idea of what my potential value might be over time given different appreciation rates, and it was a good way to visualize the long-term play. Now I'm just curious to hear from others who've done similar rollovers. Any regrets? Things you wish you knew?
Overall, I'd say I'm feeling pretty good about the decision. It diversifies my portfolio beyond just paper assets and gives me a tangible hedge. Anyone else here in TN or the South who's gone this route? What's been your experience with managing your gold IRA over the years?
