Finally pulled the trigger and rolled over a significant portion of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I’ve been kicking myself for not doing it sooner, especially with all the talk about inflation and the economy feeling wobbly. I'm a retiree from the auto industry here in Detroit, so I've seen the ups and downs firsthand in my investments over the years. My portfolio is in that $500k-$1M range, and honestly, having a good chunk of that directly tied to the market has made me a little antsy lately. I’ve owned physical gold for over two decades now, usually just buying a few ounces here and there when I felt the time was right, but this is the first time I've moved retirement funds into it.
The process was surprisingly straightforward. I picked a reputable custodian, got them connected with my old 401k administrator, and within a few weeks, the funds were transferred. I opted for a mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maple Leafs – kept it simple and recognizable. It’s a real peace of mind knowing that a good portion of my retirement savings is now in a tangible asset, sitting there in a vault, rather than just numbers on a screen moving with every tweet or geopolitical hiccup. I’m thinking about rolling over even more next year depending on how things shake out.
For those of you who’ve done something similar, what percentage of your portfolio did you end up allocating to precious metals? I’m currently sitting at around 15-20% of my total, but I’m wondering if I should push it a bit higher, especially with the Fed’s recent actions. Any other grizzled veterans out there feel like now is the time to really lean into precious metals for retirement security?
