Finally got around to executing a direct rollover from my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and feeling pretty good about it. The market volatility lately, especially with some sectors looking a bit bubbly, had me itching to de-risk a portion of my portfolio. Had about $750k sitting in a Vanguard 401k from my previous gig, mostly broad market ETFs. Decided to move roughly $300k of that into physical gold through a Gold IRA.
The process itself was surprisingly smooth. Went with Augusta Precious Metals after doing some pretty extensive due diligence – spoke to a few of the big players, but their transparency and fee structure seemed the most straightforward. Didn't want any surprises when it came to storage or annual charges. Their team walked me through the whole direct rollover procedure. Honestly, thought it would be a bigger headache with all the paperwork, but it was pretty seamless.
For me, it’s not about speculating on gold prices, but more about that old-school hedge against inflation and geopolitical uncertainty. Living in Greenwich, I see a lot of folks who are heavily weighted in equities and real estate, and while that's worked historically, there's a definite unease right now. My overall portfolio is still definitely equity-heavy, but this allocation gives me some peace of mind. It’s part of a broader strategy – probably aiming for around 10-15% in precious metals long-term across all accounts.
I went with a mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maples. Seemed like the most liquid and recognized options. What are others' experiences with diversifying their retirement funds into gold? Did you have specific metals in mind, or are you just holding generics? Always interested to hear other strategies, especially from those who've been in the game longer.
