Rolled over 401k to Gold IRA - my journey (El Paso perspective)

Alright, so I’ve been meaning to share my experience with rolling over a chunk of my 401k into a Gold IRA, especially since I'm seeing a lot of chatter lately on the sub about inflation and market uncertainty. For me, it wasn’t some spur-of-the-moment decision. My business here in El Paso has been good, but watching the news, especially with everything happening globally and how it could impact border trade, made me really start thinking about diversifying beyond just stocks and traditional bonds. I had about $180k sitting in an old 401k from a previous job, just kind of passively managed, and frankly, I was getting a little nervous about how exposed it was to market whims.
The process itself wasn't as mind-numbingly complex as I thought it might be. I spent a good few weeks doing my homework, mostly online, trying to understand the ins and outs. Shoutout to the Learning Center – that site was a lifesaver for breaking down some of the jargon and explaining the tax implications. I finally decided on a reputable custodian and did a direct rollover, which meant the funds went straight from my old 401k provider to the Gold IRA custodian. Didn't even touch my bank account, which was a relief for tax purposes. I ended up allocating about 60% of that old 401k, so roughly $108k, into physical gold and silver bullion. The rest I left in some safer, more traditional investments within the new IRA account.
It’s been about eight months now since I completed the transfer, and honestly, I feel a lot more secure. It’s not about getting rich quick; it’s about having a tangible asset that historically holds its value when everything else is going haywire. Living in a border town, I’ve seen firsthand how quickly currencies and economies can shift, and having some of my wealth in something universally recognized as valuable just makes sense to me. Anyone else in a similar boat, especially those of you running businesses or with a more international perspective? What were your triggers for looking into precious metals?
