Rolled over 401k to Gold IRA - my experience with APMEX and Augusta

Just wrapped up my 401k rollover into a Gold IRA and wanted to share my experience, in case it helps anyone else on the fence. I've been eyeing this for a while, especially with all the talk about inflation and the housing market uncertainties here in Miami. As a real estate agent, I see firsthand how fast things can change, and I really wanted to diversify my retirement savings beyond just stocks and bonds.
I had about $180k in my old 401k from a previous employer, and it was just sitting there, not really growing much and making me a bit nervous. I did a lot of research, narrowing it down to a few companies. I ended up going with Augusta Precious Metals for the Gold IRA itself and then used APMEX for the actual gold coins (American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples). The process with Augusta was surprisingly smooth. Their rep, I think his name was Mark, walked me through all the paperwork and answered my ridiculous number of questions. It felt less like a sales call and more like a consultation, which I appreciated. The whole thing from initial contact to the funds being transferred took about three weeks, which felt pretty efficient.
Transferring the funds directly from my old 401k custodian to the new IRA custodian was the most straightforward part. Then came the fun part of actually choosing the metals with APMEX. Prices fluctuate, obviously, so I was watching them like a hawk. I feel pretty good about the metals I bought – they’re in a secure depository in Delaware, which gives me peace of mind. My main goal here isn't to get rich quick, but to protect a good chunk of my retirement nest egg from economic downturns. It's a long-term play for me.
Anyone else here recently go through a similar rollover? What were your thoughts on the process or the companies you used? Always curious to hear other perspectives since I'm still relatively new to this side of investing.
