Figured I'd share my recent experience rolling over a good chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Been seeing a lot of chatter lately about inflation and the dollar, and after 30+ years in the dairy business, you get a gut feeling for when things are… not quite right. My 401k was sitting pretty well over the half-million mark and honestly, with retirement getting closer (I’m 58 now), I just wasn't feeling great having it all tied up in paper assets. Started looking into alternatives about a year ago, and gold kept coming up.
I ended up transferring about $200k of that 401k into a Gold IRA. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward, honestly. I worked with a company based out of Delaware (can’t name them here, I guess, but they were well-regarded). The custodian handled most of the heavy lifting with my old 401k provider. The only hiccup was getting the old plan administrator to send the check directly to the new custodian – they wanted to send it to me first, which would’ve triggered a tax event. Had to push back a bit on that, but eventually, they got it right. Took about 3 weeks from start to finish to see the metal in the vault account.
The precious metals dealer I chose offered a good selection of IRA-eligible coins and bars. I went with a mix of American Gold Eagles and some PAMP Suisse bars. Part of me wanted to just buy physical and stash it in my safe here in Madison, but the tax benefits of the IRA made more sense for this portion of my savings. Storage is with a third-party vault in Ohio. It's a bit of a psychological shift actually owning a physical asset, even if it's not in my direct possession. Feels more secure than just numbers on a screen.
Anyone else here in the Midwest done a similar move? What were your biggest concerns going into it? I keep an eye on gold prices daily, and while it's had its ups and downs, I'm feeling a lot more confident about having some "real money" diversified into my portfolio, especially with all the talk about potential market volatility. Curious what others' experiences have been like.
