Rolled over 401k to Gold IRA - my experience + question
- •I had about $180k sitting in a pretty standard S&P fund that just wasn't making me feel secure anymore.
- •The whole process took about 3 weeks from my first call to my account being funded, which felt pretty efficient.
- •I went with Augusta Precious Metals after doing a bunch of research.
Finally got around to rolling over a good chunk of my old 401k from a previous job into a Gold IRA, and wanted to share my experience for anyone on the fence. I had about $180k sitting in a pretty standard S&P fund that just wasn't making me feel secure anymore. Being here in El Paso, I see a lot of folks from both sides of the border dealing with economic swings, and it really solidified my decision to diversify into something more tangible. The whole process took about 3 weeks from my first call to my account being funded, which felt pretty efficient.
I went with Augusta Precious Metals after doing a bunch of research. Their customer service was solid; they answered all my questions without being pushy, which I really appreciated. A lot of these companies feel like they're trying to sell you a used car, but these guys were pretty straightforward. The actual rollover itself was surprisingly easy – they handled most of the paperwork between my old custodian and themselves. My biggest concern was the tax implications, but they fully walked me through how it’s a non-taxable event since it’s a direct rollover. Wiped away a lot of my anxiety there.
Initially, I allocated about $120k of that into various gold coins. I opted for a mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maple Leafs. I liked the recognition and liquidity of those specific coins. It’s a good feeling knowing a significant portion of my retirement isn't just numbers on a screen somewhere. The rest of the money is still in my old 401k, keeping some exposure to the market, but this gold portion feels like a real anchor.
Now, here's where I need some input from you all. I'm thinking about adding another $30k-40k to my Gold IRA next year, maybe even looking at some platinum or silver to further diversify the precious metals. Has anyone here had good experiences with platinum or silver in their IRAs? Or should I just stick to gold? Specifically, for those with a similar portfolio size, what’s your allocation strategy looking like these days? I’m leaning towards Silver Eagles but open to other suggestions. Thanks!
