Rolled over 401k to Gold IRA - my experience (Phoenix local!)

Just wanted to share my experience with rolling over an old 401k into a Gold IRA, especially for those of you on the fence or thinking about it. After the whole 2008 mess, I really started looking into ways to diversify away from just stocks and bonds. I was a teacher for 30 years here in Phoenix, and that pension is locked up, but my personal 401k always felt a bit exposed. So, about ten years ago, I started really digging into precious metals as an investment.

The actual rollover process was surprisingly straightforward. I had about $180,000 in my old 401k from my teaching days, and I decided to move about $120,000 of it into a Gold IRA. I worked with a company after doing a ton of research – spoke to a few different ones, honestly, some were a bit pushy. The one I chose walked me through everything. The funds went directly from my old 401k custodian to the new Gold IRA custodian, so I never actually touched the money. That was a big relief for me, avoiding any tax penalties.

My IRA is primarily in American Gold Eagles. I just like the comfort of having something tangible, even if it's stored in a vault in Delaware. It’s not about getting rich quick; it’s about preserving what I worked hard for. Seeing the value of my portfolio hold strong, even when the market gets volatile, gives me a lot of peace of mind in retirement. It's a chunk of my portfolio, maybe 60-70% of my investable assets outside of my pension, but it feels right for me.

Anyone else in the Phoenix area done something similar? What kind of coins did you go with? Sometimes I wonder if I should have diversified into silver or platinum too, but gold just feels like the classic safe haven. Would love to hear other people’s thoughts on their specific coin choices for their Gold IRAs.
