Seriously, best financial decision I've made in years was getting my 401k out of the stock market and into actual physical gold. For too long, I watched my retirement savings fluctuate wildly with every little market hiccup. Felt like I was constantly on a rollercoaster I didn't want to be on. I had about $380k in my old 401k from my banking days before I left that soul-crushing gig, and seeing it tied up in abstract numbers made me really uneasy, especially with all the inflation talk these days. I’m based in Portland, and it feels like everything is just getting more expensive by the minute.
The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I worked with a reputable Gold IRA company to do a direct rollover. Didn't touch the funds myself, so no tax implications or penalties, which was a huge relief. They handled all the paperwork and facilitated the transfer of funds directly from my old 401k custodian to the new Gold IRA custodian. Then I got to choose the actual coins – I went primarily with American Gold Eagles. There’s something so reassuring about knowing I own physical assets, not just digital estimates.
My thinking was, while I still have some exposure to growth assets, having a significant chunk of my retirement in gold just feels… secure. It’s a hedge against inflation, a safe haven during economic uncertainty, and frankly, it helps me sleep better at night. After working in banking for years, I saw firsthand how quickly things can change, and relying solely on paper assets just didn’t sit right with me anymore. I'm aiming for about 10-15% of my overall portfolio in precious metals. I'm currently at about 12% with this rollover, which feels just about right.
Anyone else here made a similar move? What were your motivations? And for those who are still on the fence, what’s holding you back? I’m genuinely curious to hear other people’s experiences and perspectives on this. Are there other types of coins or bars that you prefer for your Gold IRA?
