Rolled over 1.2M 401k to Gold IRA - my experience (spoiler: DO IT)

Just wanted to share my recent experience rolling over the bulk of my 401k into a Gold IRA. I’d been watching the market, especially tech stocks, feeling increasingly uneasy. After cashing out of my company last year, I had a decent chunk sitting in my old 401k – about $1.2M of equities, mostly diversified but still felt too exposed to market whims, especially with all the Fed talk and inflation worries. Living in Dublin, OH, you see a lot of people who rode the tech wave, and I heard enough stories about folks who saw significant dips that I just didn't want to risk it with my retirement nest egg.
The actual rollover process was surprisingly smooth. I spent a good month researching different gold IRA custodians and felt overwhelmed at first. Eventually landed on Augusta Precious Metals. Their representative was excellent, walked me through exactly what was involved, and honestly, eased a lot of my anxieties. The direct rollover from my 401k to the new Gold IRA account went without a hitch. I was a bit nervous about the 60-day rule, but it never even came close to being an issue. The funds were transferred directly custodian-to-custodian. For anyone wondering, I primarily opted for American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maple Leafs – felt like solid, recognizable bullion.
Now, I’m sleeping a lot better at night. Seriously. Knowing a significant portion of my retirement is backed by physical assets, stored securely, just provides a level of peace of mind that those volatile tech ETFs never could. It’s not about getting rich quick; it’s about wealth preservation and hedging against the unknown, which feels particularly relevant right now.
Anyone else in a similar boat, especially those who’ve recently rolled over a decent sum? What were your key considerations? Any regrets or things you’d do differently? I'm curious what others are seeing and experiencing out there.
