Thought I'd share my experience with rolling over an old 401k into a Gold IRA. I run a logistics company here in Memphis, and after years of building it up, I'm finally looking at succession planning, which means getting my personal investments squared away for retirement. Had about $700k sitting in an old 401k from a previous job β just collecting dust and tied to the market swings, which frankly, have been making me a little antsy lately. Decided to diversify with some physical assets.
The process itself was smoother than I expected, honestly. I went with a company that specialized in precious metals IRAs. They walked me through everything β the direct rollover, choosing the types of metals (went with mostly gold American Eagles and some Canadian Maples), and arranging for the secure storage. The hardest part was probably just getting all my old 401k paperwork together, but once that was done, it was pretty much hands-off. It felt good to finally get that capital out of the stock market roller coaster and into something I can literally hold (well, metaphorically, since it's in a vault). The peace of mind is worth a lot, especially with all the economic uncertainty out there.
One thing I was a bit stressed about before all this was the tax implications. I used that Tax Calculator tool I found online to get a rough idea of what I might be looking at, which was pretty helpful for setting expectations. It's really useful for understanding if you're going to get hit with any surprises, especially since every situation is unique. Anyone else here use that or a similar tool? Did it accurately reflect what you ended up owing or saving?
Now that it's done, Iβm curious about long-term strategies. For those of you who have had a Gold IRA for a while, what are your thoughts on rebalancing or adding more over time? Also, thinking about my kids eventually β any considerations for passing on these types of assets? Always appreciate hearing different perspectives.
