Finally pulled the trigger on rolling over a sizable chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA and honestly, it feels like a weight lifted. After the last couple of years watching the market do its rollercoaster thing, especially with all the tech volatility, I just needed some stability. Had about $700k in that old account and decided to move about half of it. The process itself wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, definitely took a few weeks of paperwork and phone calls, but my custodian was pretty helpful through it all.
I’m a tech entrepreneur here in Austin, and while I’m all about growth, I really value having a hedge. Seeing my net worth fluctuate by tens of thousands, sometimes hundreds, in a single month was just getting exhausting. Physical gold just… makes sense. It’s tangible, it’s been a store of value for millennia. It’s not going to disappear overnight because some new platform didn’t hit its subscriber targets. Plus, the tax advantages of still having it within a retirement account framework are huge.
Anyone else here made a similar move recently? Or thinking about it? I know a lot of people like to scoff at precious metals, but for me, it's about intelligent diversification, not getting rich quick. I'm mainly looking at this as a protective play, especially with inflation still being a wild card and global jitters not exactly calming down. For context, I still have plenty in stocks, real estate, and some crypto, but this gold portion just feels like a solid anchor.
Curious to hear if anyone has had any unexpected wins or headaches post-rollover. My only current "headache" is deciding what to do with the other half of that old 401k... maybe more gold, maybe something else equally defensive? Open to suggestions that aren't just "buy more NVDA."
