Rolled my old 401k into a Gold IRA - feeling good about it, anyone else?

So, I’ve been looking at the market lately, and honestly, the uncertainty is getting to me. Being a military contractor, security is literally my job, and that mindset spills over into my finances. My old 401k from a previous gig had been sitting there doing… something, I guess. It had about $180k in it, and I just couldn't shake the feeling that it was too exposed to the whims of the stock market. With all the geopolitical stuff happening, and inflation still being a beast, I started looking into ways to properly diversify.
After a bunch of research, Gold IRAs kept popping up. The idea of having something tangible, something that historically holds its value when everything else goes sideways, really appealed to that security-minded part of me. Jacksonville’s a good place, but I want my retirement to be rock-solid, no matter what’s going on further afield. I talked to a few different companies, did my due diligence on their fees and custodian options, and finally decided to pull the trigger.
The process of transferring it over was smoother than I expected, honestly. Rolled a good chunk of that 401k into a Self-Directed IRA specifically for gold. Ended up allocating around 60-70% of that $180k to gold and some silver too, just for good measure. It feels good having that physical asset backing my retirement, almost like I've secured a piece of my future against whatever crazy news cycle is next. It’s a definite comfort that if the dollar takes a hit, or if there’s another big market crash, I won't be starting from zero.
I know some people think it’s too conservative, or that gold doesn't have the same growth potential. But for me, it’s not about getting rich overnight; it’s about preserving wealth and having a safety net. Peace of mind is a huge factor for me. Anyone else here in Florida, or anywhere really, who's made a similar move? What were your reasons, and how are you feeling about it now?
