Finally pulled the trigger and rolled over a good chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I've been eyeing this for a while, especially with all the talk about inflation and economic uncertainty. Been in the steel game for 30+ years here in Birmingham, so I understand commodities and tangible assets better than abstract stocks any day. My 401k from my last employer was just sitting there, taking hits, and honestly, I was getting heartburn looking at my statements. Decided it was time to take some control.
The process itself wasn't too bad. I had about $300k in that old account, and decided to move about $150k into the Gold IRA. I spent a good few weeks researching different custodians and dealers. There are a lot of options out there, some better than others, for sure. Ended up going with one that had a solid reputation for customer service and transparency. They walked me through everything – paperwork, direct trustee-to-trustee transfer, picking out the actual coins (went with mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples for variety). It felt good to actually know what my money was doing and where it was.
Now, I'm not saying it's a magic bullet, but the peace of mind is pretty significant. Seeing those quarterly statements showing the actual physical gold held in the depository just feels different. It's a hedge, pure and simple. Anyone else pulled the trigger on a gold IRA rollover recently? What were your experiences, good or bad? Curious to hear others' thoughts on how their portfolios are performing since making the move.
