Rolled my 401k into gold – best decision for retirement or just lucky timing?

Thought I’d share my experience with rolling a good chunk of my 401k into a gold IRA. I retired from the energy sector here in Houston back in '19, right before all hell broke loose. Had a decent 401k built up over 35+ years, probably around $1.8 million at its peak. Watched a lot of my friends and colleagues ride those tech stocks up like crazy, but I’ve always been a bit more conservative, especially with retirement money. My dad always swore by hard assets.
So, mid-2018, I started looking into it. The market felt… bubbly. Not exactly a new feeling in the energy industry, but this time it just felt different for the broader market. I ended up converting about $750,000 of that 401k into physical gold held in a Gold IRA. Had a good amount of research poured into choosing the custodian and making sure everything was above board. The process itself wasn't too bad, mostly just paperwork and patience. Had some bumps along the way, a few calls to clarify things, but overall fairly smooth.
Looking back, with everything that's happened since 2020 – inflation through the roof, geopolitical jitters, even the banking scares last year – I feel incredibly validated. That $750k has done pretty damn well. I haven't done an exact calculation recently, but it's a significant portion of my overall portfolio now, probably north of $1.1 million just from that original IRA rollover. My "more aggressive" stock portion elsewhere is up and down like a yoyo. The stability and growth of the gold have been a huge comfort. It's not about getting rich overnight, it's about protecting what I've worked my whole life for.
Anyone else here go through a similar rollover process for their retirement funds? Are you seeing similar results, or do you think I just got lucky with my timing right before the world went sideways? Always curious to hear other perspectives on this, especially from folks who might have taken a different path after retirement.
