Thought I’d share my recent experience with moving some funds from my old Navy 401(k) into a Gold IRA. Been retired from the service for a few years now, and while my financial advisor has always done a great job with our traditional portfolio, I’ve been feeling a bit uneasy about inflation and the general state of the global economy. I've seen firsthand how quickly things can change, and after decades of navigating geopolitical waters, I’m big on diversification and hedging against the unexpected.
My wife and I have built a pretty solid portfolio over the years, north of the $2M mark, and after some serious discussion and due diligence, we decided to allocate about 10% of that into precious metals. For me, that meant a direct rollover of about $200k from my old employer 401(k) into a self-directed Gold IRA. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward, though it took a bit more hand-holding than I initially expected. Finding a reputable custodian was key – I interviewed three before settling on one that truly understood my concerns and didn't try to upsell me on anything I didn't need. They were very clear about the fees, which was important to me. Located here in Virginia Beach, I was able to find a few local connections for reputable places, but ended up going with a well-established national firm.
The actual transfer of funds took about three weeks from initiation to the precious metals being purchased and secured. The most nerve-wracking part was probably the week the funds were "in transit" – felt like I was watching a convoy in hostile territory, hoping everything arrived safely! I opted for a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples for variety. My primary goal here isn’t short-term gains, but long-term preservation of capital and a hedge against the kind of economic volatility I foresee. It's a different kind of discipline than traditional investing, but it aligns with the principles of risk management I've adhered to my entire career.
