Finally pulled the trigger on rolling over a good portion of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I've been running my tourism business here in Savannah for over 15 years, and let me tell you, I've seen my fair share of economic tides come and go. This latest inflation spike and general market uncertainty just made me realize I wasn't as comfortable as I thought I was with everything being in traditional assets.
The process itself was smoother than I anticipated, honestly. Had about $200k in an old employer's 401k that was just sitting there, not really doing much for me. Decided to move about $75k of that into physical gold. Spoke with a few different companies, got some quotes, and settled on one that felt transparent and didn't hit me with a hard sell. It took about three weeks from start to finish for the funds to clear and the gold to be secured in the vault. Pretty happy with how hands-off it ultimately was on my end once I made the initial decisions.
My biggest concern was timing, obviously. You never know if you're buying at the "right" time with gold, but I'm looking at this as a long-term hedge, not a get-rich-quick scheme. It's more about preserving capital and having some tangible assets outside of the digital realm. With interest rates jumping around and the dollar feeling a bit shaky, having that physical security just brings a level of peace of mind I wasn't getting before.
Anyone else in a similar boat with their portfolio? What percentage are you folks allocating to precious metals? Always interested in hearing how others are navigating these choppy waters, especially if you're also a small business owner dealing with the day-to-day fluctuations.
