Rebalancing ROTH for silver – anyone else considering

    Key Takeaways
    • I’m a doctor here in Boston, and while my practice is recession-proof, I don’t want my retirement to be at the mercy of market whims.
    • I’ve always kept a diversified portfolio, and precious metals have been a key part of that for a long time.
    • I’m thinking about using some of the gains in gold to rebalance more towards physical silver within the IRA.
    The 3-step rollover process explained

I’m just getting my head around rebalancing my Roth and was curious if anyone else is heavily considering silver right now, particularly for a Gold IRA conversion? I know this sub generally skews heavy into gold (and for good reason, gold’s been a rock for me), but the current silver prices are making me look twice. My Gold IRA is sitting pretty solid right now – probably around the $750k mark total in my retirement accounts, with a decent chunk of that in physical gold. I’m a doctor here in Boston, and while my practice is recession-proof, I don’t want my retirement to be at the mercy of market whims.

I’ve always kept a diversified portfolio, and precious metals have been a key part of that for a long time. My initial Gold IRA allocation was about 70/30 gold to silver, but with gold’s recent run, that’s probably closer to 85/15 now just from appreciation. I’m thinking about using some of the gains in gold to rebalance more towards physical silver within the IRA. The premium on silver right now feels… digestible, compared to what it was a year or two ago. And with industrial demand projections, it feels like there’s significant upside over the next 5-10 years.

My main concern is liquidity if I do decide to rebalance a larger chunk into silver. While I don't anticipate needing to sell quickly, life happens. Is anyone seeing issues with selling physical silver from their IRA custodians if they have a substantial holding? I'm using a fairly well-known custodian, but I always like to hear real-world experiences. Also, for those of you who have made similar moves, what percentage of your precious metals portfolio did you feel comfortable allocating to silver?

I hear you on the silver prices, they are tempting right now. But for a Gold IRA, I'd still lean heavily towards gold. Silver can be a bit more volatile, and for a retirement account where stability is key, gold generally offers that better long-term hedge. Just my two cents, but the "good reason" you mentioned for gold still holds a lot of weight for me when it comes to IRAs.

Totally feel this! I was actually just having a similar thought last week. All my precious metals are usually gold, but silver's been looking mighty tempting lately with the current dip. Not for a full conversion, but definitely thinking about allocating a small percentage of my Roth rebalance towards it. Good to know I'm not alone in eyeing it up!

Hey, interesting thought! When you say "current prices," are you specifically talking about the spot price of silver, or are you looking at the premium on physical silver right now? That can make a pretty big difference in the total cost.

Hey, interesting thought on silver! While gold definitely gets most of the love here, silver's current price point is making a lot of people pause.

One thing to keep in mind if you're seriously considering it for a Gold IRA (or Precious Metals IRA, as they're often called to be more inclusive) is to double-check the specific purity and storage requirements for *investment-grade* silver. Not all silver coins or bars qualify for an IRA, so make sure what you're looking at meets IRS regulations. A good bullion dealer specializing in IRAs can walk you through the eligible products!
