    Key Takeaways
    • So, my quarterly portfolio review came around last week, and I'm looking at my allocations for my IRA and 401k.
    • My gold allocation dipped a bit more than I'd like – dropped from about 8% to just under 6% of my total investable assets.
    • Most of that is in physical gold held in a Delaware depository through my Gold IRA, with a smaller chunk in a few gold mining ETFs (GDX, GDXJ).

So, my quarterly portfolio review came around last week, and I'm looking at my allocations for my IRA and 401k. My gold allocation dipped a bit more than I'd like – dropped from about 8% to just under 6% of my total investable assets. Most of that is in physical gold held in a Delaware depository through my Gold IRA, with a smaller chunk in a few gold mining ETFs (GDX, GDXJ). The S&P had a killer run this quarter, which obviously explains the re-weighting.

Typically, I'm pretty disciplined about hitting my target percentages, especially with how volatile some of these markets have been. I usually just top up the underperformers to get back to my 8-10% gold allocation. But this time around, I'm feeling a bit... hesitant. Not about gold itself, mind you. I'm a firm believer in its long-term role as a hedge, especially with how global liquidity is looking and the increasing geopolitical instability. The premium on physical is still a factor, but I'm looking at this as a multi-decade play, not trying to flip coins in a year.

My fund had a decent quarter, but honestly, I'm still feeling the pinch from some of the earlier volatility this year. Cash is piling up, but I'm thinking about deploying a significant chunk into rebalancing this gold position. It would mean adding another $150k-$200k to my current physical holdings. My wife thinks I'm being too conservative, but she also wasn't ecstatic when our tech positions took a temporary bath last year.

Anyone else feeling this tug-of-war between sticking to the plan and getting a gut feeling to just... go for it? Or am I just overthinking a standard rebalance? Would love to hear how others approach their rebalancing when one asset class has significantly outperformed everything else.

Interesting! You mentioned a Delaware depository. Any particular reason you chose that location over, say, somewhere like Ohio or Texas, which I've seen mentioned a lot for gold storage?

Totally feel this! I was in a similar boat last quarter. My silver allocation also dipped a bit more than I was comfortable with after some market shifts. Decided to pull the trigger on some more as well to get back closer to my target. Good luck with the rebalance!

Hey, I hear you on wanting to keep those allocations in check. Just playing devil's advocate here, but sometimes a small dip in gold might not be the worst thing. Are you strictly rebalancing back to 8% because that's the number you set, or are you also considering the current market conditions and why it dipped in the first place? Might be worth a quick look at the bigger picture before pulling the trigger, just in case there's an opportunity elsewhere. Not saying don't buy, just food for thought!

Totally feel you on the rebalancing. I'm in Fresno and I just pulled the trigger on some more gold myself, beefing up my precious metals allocation to about 15% of my portfolio after seeing how things are shaking out. I've been contemplating this exact move myself. I've got about 15% of my retirement in physical gold through my IRA, and frankly, with the current market volatility, it feels like a pretty safe haven. My issue is debating whether I pull from my tech stocks, which have been on a wild ride lately, or if I go a little heavier into gold than my traditional allocation models suggest. I've seen some compelling arguments here on GIRAB for upping the ante, especially given the state of the dollar.
