Rebalancing - Moving some stock to gold
- •Thinking about rebalancing my portfolio a bit and figured this would be a good place to toss the question out there.
- •Got somewhere around 800k in my IRA, mostly in what I’d call pretty safe, traditional stocks.

Thinking about rebalancing my portfolio a bit and figured this would be a good place to toss the question out there. Been in the dairy business my whole life here in Wisconsin, seen a few ups and downs, but this last year or so has me really thinking about protecting what I’ve built. Got somewhere around 800k in my IRA, mostly in what I’d call pretty safe, traditional stocks. But with all the talk about inflation and the economy feeling a bit wobbly, I'm seriously considering moving about 10-15% of that into a Gold IRA.
My main concern is the tax hit, obviously. I know it’s not as simple as just cashing out and buying gold. I’m trying to figure out the best way to do a rollover without getting hammered. Has anyone here done a significant transfer from stocks to physical gold within their retirement account recently? What kind of hoops did you have to jump through? I'm not looking to completely abandon stocks, but I feel like having that physical asset gives me a little more peace of mind, especially with election year coming up.
I was looking at this Tax Calculator tool for figuring out the tax implications, but hearing from folks who've actually gone through it would be invaluable. Any insights on reputable custodians, specific types of gold to consider (coins vs. bars for an IRA), or even just general advice on timing such a move would be greatly appreciated. Just want to make sure I'm thinking about this from all angles before pulling the trigger.
