Curious about everyone's strategy for rebalancing their Gold IRA. I've got a decent chunk, around $75k out of a ~$800k total portfolio, sitting in physical gold through a Gold IRA. I set it up about 3 years ago when I started seeing some serious red flags with inflation and the general market craziness. Being in Austin, surrounded by all the tech fluctuations, it just felt like the smart move to have a hedge.

My initial thought was to just let it sit and appreciate, essentially a long-term insurance policy. But with the recent market swings – one day things are up, the next they're down like a lead balloon – I'm starting to wonder if I should be more proactive. I rebalanced my regular brokerage accounts quarterly, but I've left the gold alone since I bought it. Is that a mistake?

I'm not looking to day-trade or anything, but should I be looking at my gold allocation annually? Semi-annually? What triggers a rebalance for you guys? Is it a certain percentage deviation from your target allocation, or more of a gut feeling based on economic news? Really trying to figure out if I'm under-optimizing here or if "set it and forget it" is actually the best play for the Gold IRA.

Any insights on your rebalancing cadence and triggers would be super helpful.

Honestly, "rebalancing" a gold allocation feels a bit like overthinking it, especially with physical gold in an IRA. The whole point for many of us is that it's a long-term hedge, a stability play. If you're constantly trying to time the market with it, aren't you kind of missing the point of why you bought it in the first place? I tend to set it and forget it, maybe glance at the percentage every few years, but not actively adjust unless my entire financial picture drastically changes.

That's a good question! I actually just went through a similar thing earlier this year. Had about 10% in gold in my Gold IRA for a few years, mostly as a hedge. When the market really started getting volatile, I actually bumped it up to about 15% just to be a bit more defensive. Haven't revisited since, but I'm thinking of doing it again around the end of the year.

Hey, interesting post! So you've got $75k in physical gold. Are you holding that as coins, bars, or a combination? And what's been your experience with the storage and insurance aspects of that much physical gold within your IRA?
