Okay, so I'm looking at my portfolio right now and doing some internal debate. Been holding a decent chunk in silver bars for about 2 years now – around $75k worth. Initially got into it as a hedge and to diversify away from some of my tech stock exposure, especially given how wild things have been. It’s been… fine. Not bad, not amazing. But with all the inflation talk and the general feeling that things are still pretty shaky economically, I’m wondering if I should rebalance.
My current Gold IRA is sitting at roughly $600k total, with the silver being an extra physical holding outside of that. I’m seriously considering selling off maybe $30k-$40k of the silver bars and rolling that cash into more gold for the Gold IRA. I’m thinking 1oz American Gold Eagles or perhaps some Canadian Maple Leafs. The appeal of gold as the ultimate safe haven feels stronger to me right now than silver, even though silver has industrial demand. My logic is that if things really go south, gold typically holds its value better, or at least that’s the historical trend I’m banking on.
My main concern is timing the sale of the silver, obviously. And then whether it's actually worth the transaction costs to shift it into gold, or if I should just hold what I've got and add to gold separately. I’m in Austin, and there are a few local dealers I’ve worked with before who are pretty fair, but selling always feels like getting a slightly worse deal than buying.
Anyone else made a similar shift from silver to gold recently? Or think I should just hold tight on the silver given its potential upside if industrial demand picks up significantly? Would love to hear some perspectives, especially from folks who’ve been through a few cycles with precious metals.
