Alright, so I’ve been building out my physical gold allocation within my IRA for a few years now – primarily through a Gold IRA. Been happy with the diversification it provides, especially with how insane the market's been. Started with about a 500k allocation back in 2018, and I’ve incrementally added to it, now sitting on just shy of 2 million in physical. Most of it's held with Delaware Depository, which offers some pretty robust security, as you'd expect. My overall portfolio is in the 3-4 million range, so this isn't my whole cookie jar, but it's a significant chunk.

I'm looking over my latest statement for the storage fees and just wanted to sanity check what others are experiencing. I'm currently paying a flat annual fee, which has been consistent, but with the increase in my holdings, I'm wondering if an ad valorem fee structure might actually be more competitive at this scale. When I first started, the flat fee made sense, but with 2 mil in metal, it feels like there might be a better deal out there. My custodian is Valaurum, and they've been solid, no complaints about service or reporting. Based out of Greenwich, CT myself, so proximity to a good vault wasn't a primary concern, but reliability definitely was.

So, the real question is: for those of you with similar-sized Gold IRA holdings (let's say 1M+), are you on a flat fee or an ad valorem percentage? And what kind of percentages are you seeing if it's the latter? Any insights on how to potentially negotiate these fees, or maybe even suggestions for custodians that are particularly competitive at higher valuations?

I'm weighing whether it's worth the hassle of a partial transfer or even a full rollover to save a few basis points, especially considering the long-term hold I'm planning. Interested to hear your experiences and any strategies you've found effective. Appreciate the input.

Storage fees are definitely a significant consideration when you're looking at a gold IRA. For my setup, with a pretty substantial allocation of precious metals as part of my overall retirement savings strategy, I'm averaging around $250 annually for segregated storage on a ~750oz gold position. While it feels a bit steep, the peace of mind knowing those assets are secure and properly insured, especially after my 401k rollover, makes it a manageable expense given the long-term tax advantages.

Hey, good question! Storage fees can definitely vary a lot. One thing to keep in mind is whether the fees are a flat rate or a percentage of your holdings. Sometimes a flat rate can become more advantageous as your holdings grow. Also, have you looked into segregated vs. commingled storage? Segregated usually costs a bit more, but your exact bars are kept separate, which some people prefer for peace of mind. Here's a pretty good breakdown I found on different storage options and how they affect fees: Investopedia - How to Store Your Gold IRA. Might help you compare!

Hey, just saw your post. I had a similar experience a few years back when I first started looking into Gold IRAs. Got a bit of sticker shock on the storage fees myself. Ended up going with a company that bundles a lot of the costs, which worked out better for my situation. Definitely worth shopping around though, as it seems like there’s a pretty wide range out there.

Hey, quick question for you about the storage fees. You mentioned you started with a $500k allocation back in 2018. Does your storage fee structure change as your allocation grows, or is it a pretty consistent rate percentage-wise regardless of the total value?

Honestly, I've always found the storage fee discussion a bit overblown. While it's obviously a factor, for a 500k+ allocation, a typical 0.5% or so really isn't breaking the bank in the grand scheme of things, especially considering the potential long-term gains gold can offer. I'm more focused on the reputable custodian and insurance than pinching pennies on a few hundred bucks a year.

Honestly, the storage fees used to be the only thing that gave me pause about my Gold IRA, especially after that scare in '08 when my 401k took a beating. Seeing those numbers plummet from my hard-earned savings, the ones I envisioned helping me retire comfortably here in Providence, was a gut punch. Now, with a good chunk of my portfolio, roughly $75k, in physical gold through a Gold IRA, I pay about $200 annually for segregated storage, and frankly, the peace of mind knowing it's not going to vanish overnight makes every penny worth it.

For storage fees, I actually found a pretty helpful calculator on the U.S. Mint's website, believe it or not. It breaks down the percentages for approved depositories and gave me a good baseline last year when I was reviewing my annual statement for my 50k portfolio. It helped me confirm if what I was paying was in line.

This is an incredibly helpful thread, truly. We just moved our setup from Brinks to Delaware Depository for our Gold IRA, and while the monthly fee is a little higher, the peace of mind knowing it's fully allocated and audited to that degree is worth every penny. For those of us with significant capital in precious metals, these small percentage differences really start to add up, so seeing everyone's figures is a fantastic benchmark. Thanks for all the input!

The storage fees are definitely a line item that can add up over time, especially with the higher insured values for physical gold. I've been with Augusta Precious Metals for my Gold IRA since early 2019, and they set me up with Delaware Depository. Their annual fee structures are pretty competitive, last year it was around $150 for segregated storage, which I consider a must for peace of mind. Make sure you're asking about segregated vs. allocated – it makes a difference.

It's interesting to see the range of storage fees folks are paying. I've personally opted for segregated storage with my Gold IRA, even though it's a bit pricier. The peace of mind knowing my specific bars are accounted for and not co-mingled with others has been worth the extra cost for my ~150k portfolio, especially given the current economic climate.

Good question! I'm in Denver and I've got about $70k of my retirement savings in a gold IRA. I did a 401k rollover back in 2021, mostly for the diversification and *tax advantages*. My annual fees for segregated storage of my precious metals currently run around $250.

This thread is a godsend! I was just comparing storage fees for my 30k in Gold Eagles and was getting a headache trying to figure out what was reasonable. The details on segregated vs. commingled have been particularly helpful.

Glad this thread came up! I'm in Phoenix myself and after rolling over a good chunk of my old 401k a few years back into a gold IRA, I spent a lot of time comparing storage costs. For my ~150k in precious metals, I'm currently paying around $180 annually for segregated storage, which I think is a pretty good deal considering the peace of mind and the significant tax advantages a gold IRA offers for my retirement savings.

It's interesting to see everyone focused on storage fees. While they're _a_ factor, I've found that the peace of mind and diversification benefits from my Gold IRA far outweigh the annual cost. My 2022 performance during the market volatility cemented that perspective for me, especially here in Minneapolis where real estate was starting to look a bit shaky.

@Patricia Miller That's a solid move, especially with the tax advantages. I'm over in Lexington and did a similar 401k rollover into a Gold IRA back in '22 with about $300k. I initially found the storage fees a bit opaque, but I stumbled upon a really helpful breakdown on Gold IRA Guide's website that laid out all the various fee structures and even had a comparison tool. Found it super useful for making sure I wasn't getting fleeced.

Man, storage fees are something I'm still wrapping my head around with my new Gold IRA. I just rolled over about $180k from an old 401k a few months ago, and I'm based in Louisville, KY. My advisor talked a lot about segregated vs. unsegregated, and I think I went with segregated for the peace of mind, but now I'm wondering if the extra cost is really worth it long-term. Is there a point where unsegregated makes more sense for a portfolio my size, or am I overthinking it? By the way, if you're looking into this, the Gold IRA Quiz was super helpful for me to even understand these terms in the first place – it really helped tailor the information to my specific situation.

Honestly, the storage fees used to stress me out more than the market fluctuations in my Gold IRA. I remember back in 2018, when I first rolled over a chunk of my old 401k – about $75k at the time – the idea of paying someone just to hold my gold felt like pouring money down the drain. Moving from Raleigh, NC, where everything feels pretty stable, to trusting a vault I'd never see, it was a hurdle. But then I hit that patch in 2020, and watching the equity market tumble while my gold held strong, those fees suddenly felt like a tiny insurance premium. Now, with the portfolio bouncing between $90-100k, the peace of mind knowing it's secure and diversifying my retirement makes the current 0.12% I'm paying feel like a steal. It’s less about the fee, and more about the sleep I'm getting.

Honestly, the storage fees have been a minor blip compared to the peace of mind. I started looking into a gold IRA for my retirement savings a few years back – decided to get some diversification beyond traditional paper assets. Ended up doing a 401k rollover, which was surprisingly smooth, and the tax advantages were a huge plus. My precious metals are sitting securely, and I'm comfortable with the costs for that kind of protection, especially with everything going on in the world.

YES, this! I just had to chime in because my fees jumped a bit this quarter and I was wondering if it was just me or a broader trend. I'm sitting around a 200k portfolio with Delaware Depository and was paying about $200 a year for segregated storage, but it just nudged up to $225. It's still a small percentage, but every little bit counts when you're looking at long-term holds!

@Maria Campbell This thread *is* a godsend, and your storage fee headache resonates with me. I remember back in '09, adding a significant chunk to my Gold IRA – we're talking a quarter-million in various bullion and coins – and the storage fee options for segregated versus commingled was a whole new level of due diligence. Ultimately, for that size of a holding, especially with some rare numismatics in the mix, going fully segregated with an audited, insured vault was a non-negotiable, even if it meant a slightly higher percentage. The peace of mind, knowing those exact 100-ounce bars I purchased are *my* 100-ounce bars, is worth every penny when you're talking about tangible assets of that value.

This thread is incredibly helpful! I was just comparing my annual storage statement for my Gold IRA – paying around $250 for a little over $750k in holdings with Delaware Depository – and wondering if that was still a competitive rate. Seeing everyone's numbers, especially those with similar portfolio sizes, gives me a much better benchmark. Much appreciated, folks!

Glad to see someone bring up storage fees. I'm with Delaware Depository for my ~700k allocation, and frankly, their pricing is pretty standard for segregated storage - comes out to about 0.15% annually. I've heard some horror stories about hidden fees with other custodians, so always dig into the fine print on those "free storage for the first year" deals.
