Hey all, long-time lurker, first-time poster. I've been doing a ton of research lately on my Gold IRA setup and something's bugging me about the storage fees. I'm a professor here in Richmond, and while I love digging into data, this one's got me scratching my head a bit. My total IRA portfolio sits in the high $300k range, and about $120k of that is in physical gold (split mostly between Krugerrands and Canadian Maples). I opened this Gold IRA about three years ago, a bit after seeing some significant market volatility and wanting that tangible hedge.
My current custodian is charging me a flat annual fee of $250 for segregated storage. When I initially signed up, it seemed reasonable, and honestly, I was more focused on getting the precious metals into the account and less on optimizing every single fee. But lately, as I've been reviewing my overall investment strategy and seeing some discussions online, it feels a little steep. I know segregated storage is generally more expensive than commingled, which I definitely prefer for peace of mind. I’ve heard whispers of some custodians offering tiered pricing or even lower flat rates for similar portfolio sizes. Is $250 par for the course these days for segregated storage on a roughly $120k gold holding?
I've been looking into other custodians like Equity Trust and Kingdom Trust, and their fee schedules seem a bit more opaque online without directly calling for a quote. I'm trying to avoid a bunch of sales calls if I can help it. My current custodian has been perfectly fine, no issues with statements or anything, but if I can save a couple of hundred bucks a year, that adds up over time, especially with the power of compounding (even on fees!).
So, for those of you with similar Gold IRA holdings, especially if you're in segregated storage, what are you typically paying in annual storage fees? Have any of you successfully negotiated lower fees with your custodian after being with them for a few years? Any advice on how to approach this, or even recommendations for custodians with competitive (but still secure) storage costs would be greatly appreciated. I'm all about research, but sometimes a bit of real-world experience beats combing through endless fee schedules.
