Question about storage fees for my gold rounds - anyone else feel this way?
- •I've been stashing away some gold rounds in my IRA for a few years now – got about $75k worth in there, mostly different sized rounds.
- •I feel good about having a chunk of my retirement in something tangible, especially with everything going on in the world.
- •It’s comforting, reminds me of the stability I try to bring to our little town here in Boise (yeah, I’m the mayor, pretty busy gig!).
I've been stashing away some gold rounds in my IRA for a few years now – got about $75k worth in there, mostly different sized rounds. I feel good about having a chunk of my retirement in something tangible, especially with everything going on in the world. It’s comforting, reminds me of the stability I try to bring to our little town here in Boise (yeah, I’m the mayor, pretty busy gig!). Anyway, I've been reviewing my statements and these storage fees are starting to feel a bit… much.
I understand why they're there. You can't exactly keep thousands of dollars in gold in your sock drawer without some serious security concerns, especially not within an IRA structure. The vault facility they use is top-notch, multi-insured, blah blah blah. But when I extrapolate these annual fees over the next 15-20 years until I retire, it really adds up. It feels like a slowly hemorrhaging drip from my overall gains, and it’s making me a little antsy.
I’m all for supporting local businesses and paying my fair share, but I’m wondering if anyone out there with a similar portfolio size (let’s say $50k-$100k in gold IRA assets) has found a way to mitigate these costs or found a provider with significantly lower/more competitive fees for segregated storage? I specifically have rounds, not bars, so I know that might play a role in how they're stored and priced.
Are there specific questions I should be asking my custodian? Or is this just the cost of doing business in the Gold IRA world, and I just need to swallow it and move on? Would love to hear some perspectives, especially from anyone who's been doing this longer than I have. Always appreciate the wisdom shared in this community!
