Been seeing a lot of chatter lately on here about gold storage. Finally decided to post my own question since I'm feeling a bit antsy about how my own IRA is set up. I've got a good chunk of my retirement, about $650k, in a gold IRA with Augusta Precious Metals. Been with them for a few years now, moved it over from a standard brokerage account after seeing how crazy the market was getting. You know, after 30 years in dairy, you get a good sense for when things are about to curdle, and I just had a gut feeling stocks weren't the place to be. Madison's a nice place, but even here you feel the economic winds changing.
My main concern is the storage fees. They seem reasonable enough, but I'm wondering if I'm missing something or if there are better options out there. Currently, I'm paying an annual fee that's a flat rate, which was fine when my account was smaller, but now that it's grown significantly, I'm starting to wonder if a percentage-based fee would actually be lower. I know some companies do it that way. Has anyone else with a larger gold IRA, say in the $500k to $1M range, found a sweet spot for storage fees?
I value the security of having it in a proper depository, don't get me wrong. Not about to stash a bunch of gold in my basement, though I know a few old-timers who probably still do that! Just trying to be a good steward of what I've worked hard for. Did any of you switch custodians purely based on storage fee structure, and if so, did you find it to be a hassle? Any advice from others who've navigated this with a sizable IRA would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
