Okay, so I've been in the gold game for a while now, first with physical holdings in my own vault, then diversified into a Gold IRA a few years back. The physical stuff has been great, but I'm looking at my latest quarterly statement for the IRA and I'm staring at these storage fees. When I set this up, my understanding was that the fees would be pretty straightforward, based on asset value. We're talking about a portfolio that's well over $5 million at this point, mostly in various gold coins, a decent chunk of silver, and some platinum. My custodian is charging me what feels like a significant percentage, and it just doesn't sit right.
I know some of you folks have been doing this longer than me, or have significantly larger holdings. What percentage of your total asset value are you typically seeing for storage fees with your Gold IRA custodian? Are we talking basis points, or something more substantial? I’m based in Aspen, and I understand there can be regional differences or differences based on the specific vault, but I want to make sure I’m not getting taken advantage of. With my real estate developments, I'm used to negotiating hard, and while it's less direct here, I want to understand what's normal.
My current setup is with a major custodian, and the storage itself is allocated, segregated storage – which I absolutely insist on given the value. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the hassle of looking into a different custodian, or if these fees are genuinely par for the course for substantial portfolios. What's been your experience with scaling storage fees as your account value grows? Does it become more efficient per dollar, or do the percentages stay relatively consistent? Any advice or insights on negotiating these things, or alternative strategies to consider for really large holdings, would be appreciated. I'm already pretty diversified with substantial physical holdings outside the IRA, but I like the tax advantages of the IRA portion.
