Feeling antsy about my gold IRA transfer timeline - anyone else?

Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger on a direct rollover from my old 401(k) into a self-directed Gold IRA. Been planning this for a while, especially since I'm aiming for an early-ish retirement here in Minneapolis and wanted to diversify away from just stocks. The amount I'm rolling over is around $180k, so it's not chump change. My advisor said to expect it to take anywhere from 2-4 weeks, maybe a bit longer depending on the custodian, but I'm officially at the 3-week mark and haven't heard much beyond the initial "we've received your paperwork."

Is this pretty typical? I know these things aren't instant, but every day it's just sitting there, not yet in physical gold, makes me a little nervous. I'm usually on top of things as a marketing executive, so this waiting game is a new kind of stress! Part of me just wants to call them every day, but I also don't want to be that client.

Anyone here gone through a similar rollover recently? How long did yours actually take from start to finish? Did you have to chase anyone down? Just trying to get a feel for what's "normal" vs. when I should actually start bugging people. Any insider tips on speeding things up, or at least managing the anxiety, would be seriously appreciated!

Totally get the antsy feeling, nobody likes waiting, especially with their retirement savings! But honestly, a lot of folks I've talked to actually prefer a slightly slower, more deliberate process for something as important as a Gold IRA. It can sometimes mean the provider is being extra thorough with compliance and making sure every T is crossed and I dotted, which, in the long run, is a good thing for protecting your assets. Fast isn't always best when it comes to financial transfers, especially large ones.

That said, it's definitely worth following up politely to get a clearer timeline if you haven't already. Just for peace of mind!

Totally get this feeling! I went through a similar thing with my silver IRA a few years back. The whole "wait and see" while your assets are in limbo is definitely unnerving, especially when you've got a specific financial goal in mind. Mine wasn't for early retirement, but for a downpayment on a cabin, and I swear I checked my account every other hour. Fingers crossed it all goes through smoothly and quickly for you!

Hey, totally get the anxiety with these big moves! Quick question: when you say "direct rollover" from your 401k, did your old plan administrator cut a check directly to your Gold IRA custodian, or was it a check made out to you that you then endorsed over? Wondering if that impacts the timeline at all.
