Just wanted to share my recent experience with an inherited IRA. My aunt passed away last year and left me a decent chunk of change – about $180k. I'm a real estate agent here in Miami, so I'm used to dealing with tangible assets, and the idea of keeping it all in paper investments just wasn't sitting right with me, especially with all the market volatility lately. My financial advisor (who I've been with for years, and he's great with real estate investments too) suggested looking into a Gold IRA for a portion of it. Ended up converting about $75k into physical gold rounds to hold within the inherited IRA structure.
The process itself wasn't too bad, though there's definitely more paperwork than just clicking "buy" on a stock app. The rollover from the traditional inherited IRA to the self-directed IRA was the biggest hurdle, but once that was set up, actually choosing the gold and having it delivered to the depository was pretty straightforward. I opted for rounds because they felt more accessible in smaller increments if I ever needed to liquidate a portion, though I'm really hoping this is a long-term play for my retirement nest egg.
My main concern now is just keeping an eye on the performance. I've been checking out tools like the "Silver vs Stocks" comparison on Gold IRA Blueprint (specifically the 10-year chart) occasionally to get a sense of how precious metals are trending against the broader market. It's really interesting to see the different cycles. What are your thoughts on comparing gold to the S&P 500 over longer periods? Does anyone else here have experience with inherited IRA conversions to physical metals?
Overall, I feel a lot more secure knowing I have a tangible asset diversifying my portfolio. It's a different kind of peace of mind than just seeing numbers on a screen. Just wondering if there are any pitfalls I should be extra aware of that I might not have considered yet. Thanks in advance for any insights!
