Gold IRA for inflation protection - my experience

Been seeing a lot of chatter lately about inflation and how folks are trying to shield their portfolios. I figured I'd throw in my two cents, especially since I've been through a few economic cycles myself. As a retired Admiral (Go Navy!), I've always prioritized discipline, and that applied directly to my investment strategy when I transitioned back to civilian life here in Virginia Beach. I'm sitting on a portfolio in the mid-seven figures, and a significant chunk of that is due to a good allocation to precious metals, specifically a Gold IRA.
I started really digging into this concept back in the early 2000s after seeing some of the writing on the wall with national debt and currency devaluation. It wasn't about getting rich quick, but rather about preserving the purchasing power of my savings. I moved about 10-15% of my total retirement assets into a Gold IRA, diversifying across various products – some physical gold coins, some unallocated gold accounts. My main goal was always inflation protection, and frankly, it's paid off beautifully. Over the last couple of decades, as the official inflation numbers have bounced around, my gold holdings have steadily climbed, often outperforming traditional stocks during periods of uncertainty. It's been a bedrock for my financial planning, far more stable than I anticipated.
I know some people view gold as a "barbaric relic," but for me, it's a solid, tangible asset that doesn't rely on government promises or corporate earnings. It’s hard assets you can hold in your hand, even if it's held by a custodian. I've always been a believer in diversification beyond just stocks and bonds, and gold fills that niche perfectly. For anyone around my portfolio size, or even smaller, looking for genuine inflation protection, I truly believe a well-structured Gold IRA deserves serious consideration. Any other long-term investors out there have similar experiences?
What percentage of your portfolio do you allocate to precious metals for inflation protection? And what are your feelings on silver vs. gold in the current climate? Personally, I've stuck mostly with gold, but I'm always open to new insights.
