Portfolio rebalance questions from a Gold IRA holder

    Key Takeaways
    • I'm looking for some advice from anyone who's had to rebalance their portfolio, particularly with precious metals.
    • My overall portfolio is in the upper six figures, so we're not talking play money here.
    • I've pulled a decent amount out of equities recently, and a good chunk of that went into PMs, which, honestly, has done well.

I'm looking for some advice from anyone who's had to rebalance their portfolio, particularly with precious metals. I'm currently sitting on about 55% gold and silver in my IRA, which felt right a few years back, but with the market going a bit insane lately, I'm starting to think it's a bit too top-heavy. My overall portfolio is in the upper six figures, so we're not talking play money here.

My business, a logistics company here in Memphis, is gearing up for succession planning over the next 5-7 years, and I'm really trying to de-risk things. I've pulled a decent amount out of equities recently, and a good chunk of that went into PMs, which, honestly, has done well. I'm just concerned that having such a large percentage tied up in physical metals might limit my flexibility down the road, especially if I need more liquid capital for whatever comes next with the business transition. It's really making me a little anxious.

Has anyone successfully rebalanced out of such a high PM allocation? What's the process like for selling a portion of your Gold IRA? I'm debating what asset classes to move into. Real estate is always an option in this area, but I'm thinking about broader diversification. Any thoughts on what to look at now that's not quite as volatile as some of the tech stocks out there, but still offers some growth potential?

Any insights or personal experiences would be hugely appreciated. Trying to make smart moves here.

Oh man, I totally feel you on this one! I was in a super similar boat a couple of years ago. Had a good chunk of my IRA in metals, felt solid at the time, then everything started shifting and I was like "uh oh, is this still the move?"

It's definitely tricky figuring out that sweet spot. Good luck with the rebalance, hopefully you get some solid advice here!

Hey, interesting post. So you're at 55% gold and silver right now. What was your original target allocation for precious metals when you first set up the IRA?

Hey, I hear you on the rebalancing dilemma. While 55% PMs might seem high to some, I think it really depends on your individual risk tolerance and overall financial goals. "Right" is a subjective term here, and what felt right a few years ago might still be the right move for you now, even if the market looks different. Are you feeling *over-exposed* to gold and silver, or just second-guessing yourself because of the current market chatter? Sometimes sticking to your original conviction is the play, especially with long-term assets like precious metals in an IRA.

Hey, I hear you on the rebalancing. It's tough sometimes to know when and how much to adjust, especially with PMs.

One thing that's helped me is checking out resources like this article on Investopedia about portfolio rebalancing strategies. It gives some good practical advice beyond just the "why" and helps you think through different approaches. Might be a good starting point for your own situation!

Totally get where you're coming from on this. I'm in a pretty similar boat, though my metals are sitting a bit lower at around 40%. The market's definitely been doing its thing lately, making me reconsider my original allocation too. Good to hear I'm not the only one thinking about this!
