Been seeing a lot of chatter lately about silver and gold (duh, always is) but not as much regarding platinum. For those of us who've been in this game for a while, it's hard to ignore how platinum has performed over the last few years. Seriously, looking at the charts, it feels like it's been kicked to the curb since the mid-2000s, especially post-2008. Used to be it traded at a pretty consistent premium to gold, now it’s way, way below. Makes you wonder if it's finally time for a comeback.

I’ve been holding a mix of physical gold and some mining stocks for over 20 years now, mostly since I retired from the auto industry here in Detroit. My portfolio is probably sitting around the $750k mark and gold makes up a substantial portion of that. I'm hitting that age where I'm starting to think more seriously about RMDs too. I actually just used that RMD Calculator (rmdcalculator.goldirablueprint.com) tool to get a better handle on what I'm looking at in the next few years – definitely an eye-opener. But back to platinum – my concern is, with electric vehicles becoming more prominent, is the industrial demand for catalytic converters going to just permanently crater? That’s always been such a huge driver for platinum demand.

I picked up a few ounces of platinum coins back when gold was trading at $1200 an ounce, thinking I was being clever and diversifying. I’m still holding onto them, more out of stubbornness than anything else at this point. Part of me thinks the market is overestimating the speed of the EV transition, or maybe there will be new industrial uses that pick up the slack. What are your thoughts on platinum long-term? Are any of you actively buying or selling it right now? Or is it truly a ‘dead’ metal for investors?

Totally feel this! I bought some platinum back in the early 2000s, thinking it was a genius move. Everyone was hyping it up, industrial demand was soaring, felt like a no-brainer. Fast forward a few years, and yeah, it definitely hasn't lived up to that initial excitement. My gold and silver have done far better.

Still holding onto it, though. Who knows, maybe one day it'll surprise us all again!

Interesting point about platinum! I've definitely noticed the same trend. You mentioned it feels like it's been "kicked" - what specifically are you seeing in the charts that makes you say that? Are we talking price drops, lack of recovery, or something else?

I hear you on platinum, it definitely feels like the ugly stepchild sometimes. But "forgotten" might be a strong word. I think it's more that it just doesn't have the same *story* as gold or silver. Gold is the ultimate safe haven, silver is the industrial workhorse with a monetary past. Platinum... it's a bit more niche, heavily tied to industrial demand, especially auto catalysts. When that sector struggles, so does platinum. So while the performance might seem lackluster, I'd argue it's more about its specific market drivers rather than being completely overlooked by folks who actually understand PMs.
