Is platinum the dark horse no one's talking about?

    Key Takeaways
    • Been seeing some chatter lately, mostly off-forum, about platinum potentially being undervalued, and it’s got me thinking.
    • My Gold IRA with Augusta Precious Metals is humming along nicely – just crossed the $380k mark last month, mostly in eagles and buffalos.
    • Rolled over an old 401k into it back in 2020 when things got squirrely with the market, and I haven't regretted it for a second.

Been seeing some chatter lately, mostly off-forum, about platinum potentially being undervalued, and it’s got me thinking. My Gold IRA with Augusta Precious Metals is humming along nicely – just crossed the $380k mark last month, mostly in eagles and buffalos. Rolled over an old 401k into it back in 2020 when things got squirrely with the market, and I haven't regretted it for a second. The peace of mind alone is worth it, knowing I've got a solid allocation in something tangible.

My advisor at Augusta actually brought up platinum as a potential diversifier a while back, but I just wasn't feeling it. Gold felt like the obvious, battle-tested play, especially for someone in my position – I appreciate a good legacy, whether it's a bourbon brand that's been around for 150 years or a currency metal with millennia of history. Platinum, on the other hand, just feels…younger, I guess? More industrial, less "store of wealth" in the traditional sense.

However, the more I dig into the supply/demand dynamics, especially with the EV push and industrial uses, it makes you wonder. Gold's had a hell of a run, and I'm not saying it's done, but is there a point where platinum starts to look like a screaming deal in comparison? For those of you with a more diversified PM portfolio than my gold-heavy one, have you dabbled in platinum? What’s your take on its long-term potential compared to gold and silver? Am I being too conservative sticking mostly with gold right now?

Thinking about allocating maybe 10-15% of new contributions to platinum if the consensus is that it's genuinely undervalued without being overly speculative. Would love to hear some perspectives from this group before I schedule another chat with my guy at Augusta.

Interesting thought, OP. While platinum definitely has its industrial uses and scarcity, I wonder if the "dark horse" analogy really holds up for a retirement account. Gold and even silver have a much longer, undeniable history as monetary metals and hedges against inflation. Platinum's price can be a lot more volatile due to its industrial demand, which might not be ideal for something you're hoping will be a stable long-term asset in your IRA. Just a thought!

Dude, I was just having this exact conversation with my brother last week! He's heavy into platinum and keeps trying to convince me to diversify some of my gold into it. My Goldco IRA is doing great too, but the thought of platinum as a "dark horse" is definitely intriguing. Like, it *feels* like it should be more expensive than gold sometimes, right? Good on you for hitting $380k!

Congrats on hitting that $380k mark, that's awesome! Quick question though, when you say "mostly off-forum," where exactly are you seeing this platinum chatter? Curious to check it out myself.

That's an interesting thought about platinum! It definitely doesn't get as much airtime as gold or silver for IRAs. One thing to keep in mind if you're looking into it for your Gold IRA is that not all platinum coins are IRA-eligible. For example, the American Platinum Eagle is, but other popular platinum coins might not be. Double-check with your custodian to make sure any platinum you're eyeing meets IRS guidelines to avoid any surprises!
