I've been out of the daily grind on Wall Street for a few years now, enjoying the fruits of my labor up here in Westchester. One thing that hasn't changed is my philosophy on capital preservation, especially with all the market noise lately. I've always had a heavy allocation in metals, particularly physical gold in my IRA, dating back to my early days in finance when I saw what inflation could really do. I'm sitting on a portfolio North of $3 million right now, and a significant chunk is in tangible gold, held securely, of course.
My son, who's still in the thick of it down in the city, was asking me about "paper gold" for his own retirement planning. He's looking at ETFs and futures, which honestly, makes me groan a little. I understand the liquidity argument, sure, and the lower storage costs. But after decades of seeing how these instruments behave when the markets truly turn volatile, I just can't shake the feeling that it's a house of cards compared to having the actual metal. For me, the peace of mind of knowing I hold the physical asset, not just a promise from another institution, is priceless. Especially when we're talking about an IRA, where the goal is long-term security, not short-term trading.
What are your thoughts on this? I know there are strong arguments on both sides. Have any of you had experiences where the "paper" option really let you down, or, conversely, where it outperformed physical gold in a way that made you rethink? I’m particularly interested in hearing from anyone who's navigated a similar decision for their own Gold IRA. If you’re still trying to figure out which direction to go, you might find that Gold IRA Quiz pretty useful for getting a feel for the options.
