Been thinking a lot lately about this whole physical gold vs. paper gold dilemma for IRAs, especially as the market feels like it's doing the cha-cha. As someone who’s been retired from the energy sector here in Houston for a good few years now, and with a portfolio pushing past the 1-mil mark (thanks to some smart plays and a lot of just letting things grow), my gold holdings are a substantial chunk of my overall investment. I've always leaned heavily into physical gold for my IRA, the kind that sits in a secure vault, because the idea of owning something tangible just makes more sense to me, given all the market volatility I’ve seen in my lifetime.
My reasoning has always been pretty straightforward: if things really hit the fan, that physical bar is still there. With paper gold, whether it’s ETFs or certificates, you’re relying on a promise from someone else. I remember living through some hairy oil price drops back in the day, and let me tell you, that feeling of uncertainty sticks with you. So when they talk about "counterparty risk" with paper gold, it really resonates with me. It’s hard to shake off that apprehension when you’ve seen businesses fold and promises vanish into thin air. I’ve heard plenty of arguments about liquidity and ease of trading with paper gold, but honestly, for a long-term retirement asset, I’m not looking to day-trade my gold. I’m looking for a bedrock, something that’ll weather the storm.
That said, I’m always open to hearing new perspectives. I've been doing some reading on the topic, and even checking out resources like the Learning Center. It’s amazing how much info is out there if you just look for it. For those of you with Gold IRAs, how have you structured your holdings? Are you purely physical, or do some of you dabble in paper gold? What are the biggest factors driving your decisions?
