Okay, diving into the whole physical gold vs. paper gold debate – this is something I’ve wrestled with, especially after accumulating a pretty substantial precious metals portfolio over the last decade. Early on, I definitely jumped into some "paper" without fully understanding the implications. Think ETFs, mining stocks, even some of those gold certificates that sounded official but felt...remote.
My big pivot came around 2016. I was sitting here in Scottsdale, looking at my portfolio screen, and realized that while the numbers looked good on paper, I didn't actually hold anything. For an entrepreneur like me, whose whole ethos is about tangible assets and real value, that felt fundamentally wrong. What if the system glitched? What if there was a major economic event and those digital promises couldn't be fulfilled? That gnawing feeling led me to liquidate a good chunk of my paper positions and start aggressively converting it into physical gold and silver, primarily held within my Gold IRA, but also a good amount stored privately.
Now, I’m probably about 70/30 physical to paper. The physical gives me an incredible sense of security and genuine diversification, especially in an inflationary environment. There’s something truly different about holding a kilo bar than seeing a number on a statement. Is it inconvenient? A little, sure. Storage isn't free, and you can't instantly trade it with a click. But for me, the peace of mind and the hedge against systemic risk far outweigh the slight illiquidity. Paper absolutely has its place for active trading or if you're just looking for exposure without the hassle, but should it be your entire strategy?
My question for you all: For those of you with significant gold holdings, what's your physical-to-paper split and why? Has anyone else made a major shift from paper to physical over time, and what prompted it?
