Palladium in my IRA - worth it?

Been thinking a lot about diversifying out of just gold and silver in my precious metals IRA. Currently sitting on about 700k in the account, mostly allocated to gold, given the current geopolitical climate and, frankly, the shaky outlook for the dollar. I retired from active duty a few years back, and seeing things unfold in the Pacific theater, it just reinforces my belief in hard assets. Got me wondering about palladium – anyone here have it in their IRA?

I’ve been reading up on it, and the industrial demand for catalytic converters and electronics seems pretty compelling. It’s not just a speculative play, there’s real utility. But then again, the volatility sometimes makes me a little nervous. After 30 years in the military, I'm not looking for wild swings, just steady, reliable growth and wealth preservation. My financial advisor back on Oahu has mentioned it, but honestly, I trust the collective wisdom of you folks here more when it comes to getting into the weeds of specific metals.

What are your thoughts on palladium as a long-term hold in an IRA? Specifically, for folks like me who are already retired and starting to think about RMDs. Speaking of which, for anyone else nearing that stage, I found this RMD Calculator to be super helpful for planning – definitely something to check out if you haven't already. It's a different beast once you start having to take money out of these accounts.

Are you holding palladium? What percentage of your overall precious metals portfolio is it? Any particular insights or red flags I should be aware of beyond the basic supply/demand stuff? I’m all ears for different perspectives.

Definitely worth considering! I actually went through a similar thought process a few years back. Had a good chunk in gold and silver, but the palladium kept catching my eye. Did a bunch of research and ended up adding a smaller percentage to my IRA. Haven't regretted it – it's been interesting to see how it moves somewhat independently sometimes. Good luck with your decision!

Hey, interesting thought process. You mentioned having about 700k in your IRA. Is that the total value of your whole retirement account, or just the portion allocated to precious metals?

Hey, I hear you on wanting to diversify, especially with that kind of capital. But honestly, palladium always strikes me as a bit of a niche play compared to gold and silver for a retirement account. It's got those industrial uses, sure, but the market can be pretty volatile and less liquid. Have you looked into platinum as an alternative? It often trades at a discount to gold and still has strong industrial demand, plus it's generally more stable than palladium. Just a thought!

Hey, that's a solid question about palladium. It definitely has its own unique market dynamics compared to gold and silver, especially with industrial demand. One thing I found really helpful when I was looking into it was comparing the historical price performance and volatility of palladium against gold.

You might want to check out some of the charts on sites like Kitco or MetalsDaily. They often have good comparative data that can help visualize how palladium typically moves relative to other precious metals. Good luck with your decision!
