Palladium in the IRA - Anyone else seeing the potential

    Key Takeaways
    • Been thinking a lot about diversifying the precious metals sleeve of my IRA lately, beyond just gold and silver.
    • I’ve got a decent chunk in both, probably a 350k portfolio total, and a good 70k of that is in physical gold eagles and bars held by my custodian.
    • I own a construction company here in Chicago, so I'm a big believer in tangible assets, things you can literally hold and see.

Been thinking a lot about diversifying the precious metals sleeve of my IRA lately, beyond just gold and silver. I’ve got a decent chunk in both, probably a 350k portfolio total, and a good 70k of that is in physical gold eagles and bars held by my custodian. Lately, though, palladium has been screaming at me as a potential strong performer, especially with the direction global economies seem to be heading. I own a construction company here in Chicago, so I'm a big believer in tangible assets, things you can literally hold and see. Paper assets just don't give me the same peace of mind, especially after watching markets these past few years.

My gut tells me palladium, with its industrial demand primarily in catalytic converters (which aren't going anywhere fast, despite the EV push) and other electronics, is undervalued right now. It's been a little volatile, sure, but that's what makes me think there's upside. I'm looking at allocating maybe 5-10% of my precious metals holdings to palladium, probably some bars or coins that are IRA-eligible, to help reduce overall portfolio risk and capture some of that potential growth. It feels like a smart play, diversifying within the tangible asset class.

Before I pull the trigger and start talking to my broker, I wanted to throw this out there. Has anyone else here already added palladium to their Gold IRA? What was your reasoning? Are you seeing the same signs as me, or am I missing something critical? Any horror stories or massive successes? Would love to hear some real-world experiences from people who've actually done it, not just read articles online. Thanks in advance for any insights!

Interesting thought about palladium. You mentioned it's been "screaming" – what exactly are you seeing that makes you say that? Price action, demand? Curious to hear your read on the market.

Hah, you're not nuts at all! I actually went through a similar thought process last year. Mymetals IRA was pretty gold-heavy, and while I love gold, I started looking at palladium after reading about its industrial demand. Ended up allocating a small percentage to it, mostly coins, and it's been interesting to watch. Definitely adds a different dynamic to the portfolio.

Dude, palladium has definitely had its moments, but "screaming potential" might be a bit strong right now, especially for an IRA. It's a much smaller, more volatile market than gold or silver, and illiquidity can be a real issue if you need to sell quickly. For a long-term IRA play, that kind of price swing anxiety might not be worth it. Just something to consider before going all-in.

Totally get where you're coming from on palladium. It's definitely an interesting one for diversification!

One thing to keep in mind, especially with the higher premium metals for IRA, is the bid-ask spread when it comes time to liquidate. Custodians sometimes have specific procedures or preferred dealers that can affect that spread. Might be worth checking with your custodian about their specific palladium liquidation process and any associated fees before making a big move. Good luck!
