I’ve been eyeing palladium for a while now, primarily for my Gold IRA. Made a good chunk of my retirement in oil and gas, and while I’m firmly in the gold and silver camp (got a pretty substantial chunk of both, easily 7 figures worth just in precious metals), I’m wondering if palladium is worth adding to the mix. It feels like a natural diversification, especially with the direction the auto industry is heading. Houston traffic alone tells me the world isn't going to stop needing catalytic converters anytime soon, even with EVs gaining traction.

My concern is the volatility. I know gold has its ups and downs, but palladium seems like it moves on a different scale. I'm not looking to make a quick buck; this is for the long haul, protecting my wealth. I retired comfortably a few years back, so I’m not needing this capital anytime soon, but I still want smart growth. Are any of you out there holding physical palladium in your IRA? How has it performed for you over, say, the last 5-10 years? Did you pull the trigger when prices were lower or higher? Thinking of allocating maybe 5-10% of my precious metals portfolio to it initially.

I’ve done a fair bit of research on the industrial demand, particularly from automotive catalysts and even some electronics. But the supply side, especially from Russia and South Africa, makes me a bit nervous. Geopolitical issues can whip up prices in a hurry, in either direction. I’m comfortable with risk, especially being a lifelong energy guy, but I'm talking about retirement funds here, not drilling for the next big find.

Any insights, positive or negative experiences, or even just general thoughts on palladium as an IRA asset would be really appreciated. Am I overthinking the volatility? Or is it a smart play for someone already heavily invested in other precious metals?

Honestly, palladium's been a ride. I dipped my toes into it back in 2018 when it was still under $1000, mostly just diversifying my precious metals IRA beyond just gold and silver. My advisor at the time (who I've since moved on from, long story) was pushing platinum pretty hard, but I saw the industrial demand for palladium accelerating, especially with auto catalysts. For a while there, I was feeling pretty smart, watching it rocket past $2k, then even $3k. But then the whole supply chain mess and EV push started hitting. I ended up trimming a good chunk of my holdings last year when things felt a bit too volatile. Still hold a small position, but I'm definitely more cautious now. It’s got potential, but it’s not for the faint of heart or a huge chunk of your portfolio, in my opinion.

I totally get the appeal! I actually put a small percentage into palladium in my IRA a few years back. Not a huge amount, but it’s been interesting to watch. Definitely added a bit of diversification, which was my main goal.

Interesting! You mentioned a "pretty substantial chunk" of gold and silver already. Is this palladium move about further diversification within precious metals, or are you seeing something specific in palladium's market that you like?

Palladium's interesting, for sure, and I get the appeal given its industrial demand. But just a thought: have you looked at the supply side closely? It's pretty concentrated, and that can introduce some unique geopolitical risks that aren't quite as pronounced with gold or even silver. Might be worth factoring that into your diversification strategy, especially for a retirement account.

I actually dove into palladium a couple years ago, put about 10% of my IRA into it back when it was flying high. Ended up getting out before the big dip, luckily. What really helped me track the supply/demand side of things was Kitco's comprehensive Palladium Market Review. It digs deep into industrial demand, mining output, and geopolitical factors – way more detail than you get from a quick market update. Definitely worth a read before you jump in.

I looked into Palladium back in '21 when it was really spiking. Decided against it for my Gold IRA, even with the industrial demand. The volatility just felt too high compared to gold or even silver, and the buy/sell spreads for physical weren't as tight. Stuck with my Minneapolis-based gold & silver, no regrets so far given its performance since.
