Okay, so I've been doing a lot of reading lately about my Gold IRA, and honestly, the sheer volume of information is a bit overwhelming. My late husband, bless his heart, set a lot of this up, and I'm really trying my best to understand it all and protect what he built for us. We're talking about a portfolio around the low end of $100k right now, and I just want to make sure I'm making smart choices here in Raleigh.
My big question right now is about numismatic coins versus bullion. I know the IRS has rules about what's allowed in a Gold IRA, and I want to stay compliant. From what I'm gathering, bullion coins (like American Gold Eagles or Canadian Maple Leafs) are generally more straightforward for an IRA. They're valued primarily for their metal content, and the premiums seem relatively low. That feels pretty safe and predictable, which is appealing to me.
Then there are numismatic coins. Some of the articles I've read make them sound like a potential way to get higher returns because of their rarity or historical value. But then others warn about much higher premiums and the potential for greater risk if you don't know exactly what you're doing. I don't pretend to be a coin expert, not even close. Is the potential upside really worth the added complexity and potential for a higher premium that cuts into my precious metal value?
Has anyone here had experience with both in their IRA? What did you find to be the pros and cons? I want to make sure Iβm making decisions that honor my husbandβs legacy and provide financial security, not taking unnecessary risks. Any insights, especially from those who have been through this decision, would be incredibly helpful. Thanks in advance!
