Alright, so I’ve been kicking this around in my head for a while, and figured this was the place to get some real-world input. I’ve got a decent chunk of my retirement in a Gold IRA, roughly $300k of my total portfolio. Most of that's in standard IRA-approved bullion – American Gold Eagles, stuff like that. Pretty straightforward, tried and true.
But lately, I’ve been wondering about numismatic coins for a small portion of it. I'm a commodities guy at heart, spent 30+ years in steel down here in Birmingham, so I understand the fundamentals of a tangible asset. Bullion makes sense. But I’ve been seeing some compelling arguments for numismatic coins in tax-advantaged accounts, specifically around the potential for appreciation beyond just the spot price of gold. Obviously, you're looking at higher premiums, and liquidity can be a concern. My current custodian, for example, really pushes bullion, which I get – simpler for them, probably fewer headaches.
My concern is tying up capital in something that might underperform or be a pain to liquidate when I finally need to tap into it. I’m still a good 10-15 years out from retirement, so there's time for appreciation. Is anyone here actively holding numismatic coins in their Gold IRA? What’s been your experience? Are the potential gains worth the added complexity and premiums compared to just sticking to plain bullion?
I’m thinking about carving out maybe 5-10% of my precious metals allocation for something a bit more exotic, just to diversify the diversification, if that makes sense. Or am I just overthinking it and should just keep stacking those Eagles? Any insights, good or bad experiences, or even links to solid resources on numismatics in an IRA would be hugely appreciated.
