I've been kicking around the idea of adding more to my Gold IRA and honestly, the whole numismatic vs. bullion thing still trips me up a bit. Back in 2020, when things were getting wild with the casinos here in Vegas and my 401k felt like a slot machine on a bad run, I decided to diversify a chunk of my retirement. Ended up putting about $150k into a Gold IRA. My advisor at the time recommended mostly bullion (American Gold Eagles mostly), which seemed like a solid, safe bet, and I was good with that. My mindset was always risk management first, especially with my background in the industry – you learn quickly when to walk away or when to double down.
Now, I'm looking at potentially adding another $50k or so, and I keep hearing whispers about numismatic coins and their "collectibility" and potential for higher gains beyond just the spot price of gold. My gut, from all my years watching the house always win, tells me to stick with the simple, straightforward bullion. It just feels less… manipulated? Like, the value is clearer to track. But then I see some of these limited edition coins and wonder if I'm missing out on a different kind of leverage. I’ve always been good at spotting trends and value in other areas, but the overlap between precious metals and collectibles feels like a different beast.
Has anyone here gone the numismatic route for their IRA? What were your experiences? Did you see the kind of appreciation beyond gold's spot price that people talk about, or was it a lot of hype for not much return? I'm trying to decide if it's worth allocating even a small percentage of my next investment to numismatics, or if I should just stay the course with pure bullion. I’m in my late 50s, so I’m not looking to get crazy, but if there’s a smart play, I’m always open to learning. Is the premium on numismatics generally worth it in the long run for an IRA?
My concern is always liquidity too. With bullion, it feels like I could offload it relatively easily if needed. Numismatics seem like they might take longer to sell and probably at a wider spread. Thoughts?
