I've been seeing a lot of chatter lately, both here and on other finance subs, about numismatic vs. bullion coins, especially when it comes to IRAs. As someone who’s had a good chunk of my retirement savings (we're talking mid-six figures, around $300k, mostly in real estate and my Gold IRA) in precious metals for a while now, I figured I'd share my perspective and see what others are doing.
When I first rolled over part of my military pension into a Gold IRA after retiring down here in San Diego, the whole numismatic versus bullion debate was a big one for me. My financial advisor at the time (who specialized in PMs) really pushed for bullion coins – American Gold Eagles, Canadian Maples, that kind of thing. His argument, and one I agreed with, was mainly about simplicity and liquidity. He emphasized that for an IRA, you want the metal's value to be as close to spot as possible, and bullion does that best. Plus, it's easier to buy and sell without the premium headaches you get with collector coins.
I still largely agree with that strategy. My main goal is long-term wealth preservation and a hedge against inflation. With that in mind, those higher premiums on numismatic coins always felt like a detriment when the underlying asset is the metal itself for an IRA. I know some folks swear by numismatics for their potential appreciation beyond the metal content, but for me, that felt too speculative for my retirement nest egg. I prioritized that peace of mind knowing the value was directly tied to the gold price.
However, I'm always open to new data and different approaches. Has anyone here gone the numismatic route for their IRA and seen it pay off significantly more than just sticking with bullion? What were your reasons for choosing them? Also, on a related note, for those of you who track silver, I recently found this pretty neat "Silver vs Stocks" tool on Gold IRA Blueprint (goldirablueprint.com/?period=10Y) which shows how silver has performed against the S&P 500 over different periods. It's a useful way to quickly visualize the data without digging through a bunch of charts. I'm curious if anyone has used a similar tool to compare numismatics to bullion performance over time within an IRA context. Would love to hear your experiences and any insights!
