I've been in the gold game for a while now, especially since cashing out of my tech startup a few years back. Most of my capital went into a Gold IRA, and it's been rock solid. I'm based here in Dublin, Ohio, and honestly, seeing the market volatility lately just reaffirms that decision.
When I first started setting up my IRA, one of the biggest mental hurdles was the whole numismatic vs. bullion coin debate. I literally spent weeks researching this, going back and forth. My initial thought, coming from a tech background where everything is about optimization and intrinsic value, was that bullion was the only way to go. Pure weight, pure metal, no fancy premiums. I was looking at American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maples mostly. Simple, straightforward, easy to liquidate if needed. And that's what a good chunk of my sub-$5M portfolio is in. These are the workhorses.
However, after a few more conversations with my advisor and digging deeper, I started to see the appeal of some numismatics, even if only for a smaller, speculative portion. The idea of potential collector value on top of the intrinsic metal value is intriguing, especially for certain rare issues. I mean, if you're holding something that's already rare and a significant historical piece, it just feels more resilient. But the premiums can be wild, and the market for them is a lot less transparent than just spot price for bullion. I honestly chickened out on buying any significant numismatics for my IRA, mostly sticking to bullion for the bulk.
My question for you all is: For those of you with Gold IRAs, especially those who made a conscious decision for or against numismatics, what was your reasoning? Did anyone ever regret leaning too heavily one way or the other? How do you factor in the liquidity aspect with higher-premium numismatic pieces? I'm always looking to refine my strategy, and I found a lot of good foundational info in the Learning Center regarding the basics, but hearing real-world experiences always makes a difference. Let's hear it!
