I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter lately, both here and on other forums, about whether to go with numismatic or bullion coins for a Gold IRA. As someone who recently cashed out of my tech startup last year and rolled a significant chunk of my portfolio (just shy of $3 million) into a Gold IRA, this is a topic I spent a considerable amount of time debating. For transparency, I'm based in Dublin, OH, and worked with Red Rock Secured among others to set up everything up.

Initially, I was heavily leaning towards numismatic. The idea of owning something rare, something with historical value beyond just the metal content, really appealed to me. I mean, who doesn't want a piece of history? My financial advisor, however, despite being generally supportive of precious metals, was pretty firm on sticking to bullion for the IRA portion. His argument revolved around liquidity, lower premiums, and the fact that the IRS guidelines for what's "IRA-eligible" lean heavily towards bullion. He was worried about future audits or potential issues with the added complexity of numismatic valuations. He even pulled up some stats showing how often numismatic coins fail to appreciate above their metal value plus premium, especially outside of very specific, high-end pieces.

In the end, I went with his advice for the IRA. So, my Gold IRA is entirely bullion – American Gold Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, and some Krugerrands. I feel pretty good about it, honestly. The transparency of pricing and the straightforward nature of tracking its value are comforting. However, I did decide to buy some numismatic coins personally, outside of the IRA, with a smaller portion of my liquid assets – just because I still find them fascinating. It’s more of a hobby investment for that part.

So, for those of you who have gone the numismatic route within your Gold IRA, what was your rationale? Did your advisor push back? And for those who, like me, stuck with bullion, do you ever find yourself wishing you'd diversified into numismatics within the tax-advantaged account? I genuinely want to hear varied perspectives here before making any further moves on my non-IRA gold.

Totally get where you're coming from on this! I faced a really similar dilemma a few years back when I diversified my portfolio after selling a small business. I went with mostly bullion, but did put a small percentage into some pre-1933 St. Gaudens for the numismatic appeal and potential added value. So far, no regrets.

What kind of premiums were you seeing on the numismatics you were looking at? That was a huge factor for me in sticking mostly to bullion.

Hey, interesting post! When you say "rolled a significant portion" of your startup earnings into the Gold IRA, did you opt for a direct rollover or did you take a distribution first and then do an indirect rollover? Just curious about the mechanics of how you handled that with the startup funds.

Interesting take, OP. While I totally get the appeal of potential numismatic upside, I always lean towards pure bullion for an IRA. The whole point for me is a straightforward, easily liquidatable store of value, not collecting. The premium with numismatics can be a killer on the way in and out, and while there's a chance for appreciation, there's also the risk that the collector market just isn't there when you need to sell. Seems like an unnecessary complication for a retirement account, but to each their own!
