Alright folks, I'm wading into the Gold IRA waters and could use some seasoned advice. Been a metals guy for decades, almost all my portfolio is tied up in physical (various sizes, some stored, some... not), but I'm just now getting around to rolling over some of my old 401k into a proper Gold IRA. I’m an old Wall Street hand, retired comfortably in NYC, and honestly, this feels like an overdue move for true diversification, even with my current heavy metals allocation.
My current portfolio is sitting pretty between $3-4M, and I'm looking to put about $500k – maybe $750k – into this Gold IRA. I'm used to handling substantial sums, but the tax implications and custodian selection for this specifically are a new ballgame. I'm seeing a lot of marketing out there, and frankly, some of it sounds a bit too good to be true. Any specific custodians you've had good (or bad!) experiences with? What were the red flags you learned to look out for early on? I'm not afraid to pay for quality service, but I don't want to get fleeced on fees either.
Also, given the scale I'm operating at, are there any unique considerations for larger Gold IRA transfers? I'm thinking about storage locations too – is there a consensus on better facilities or regions for security and access (even if I never plan to access it manually)? I've been doing my homework, even spent a good chunk of time on the Learning Center at Gold IRA Blueprint, which has been incredibly helpful for understanding the basics and even some of the more nuanced tax implications. But nothing beats real-world anecdotes.
My primary goal here is long-term preservation of capital, not looking for quick gains from price swings. Just want to ensure my golden eggs are in the right basket, literally. For those of you who've been through this process, what's one piece of advice you wish you'd heard before you started? What are the common pitfalls I should absolutely avoid? Appreciate any insights you can share!
