My wife talked me into a Gold IRA rollover, and I'm honestly impressed.

Okay, so I was always a bit of a skeptic when it came to gold. As a principal teaching financial literacy here in Little Rock, I tend to stick to what I know – ETFs, index funds, the usual suspects. My wife, however, has always been more of a "diversify, diversify, diversify" type. For about a year, she'd been gently, then not so gently, nudging me towards looking into a Gold IRA, especially after seeing some of the inflation numbers creep up. I kept brushing it off, thinking it was just some shiny object investment.
Well, she finally got her way. We had about $75k sitting in an old 401(k) from a previous job that wasn't doing much, and she convinced me to look into rolling a portion of it over. I spent a solid weekend researching regulations, reputable companies, and the whole custodial process. Honestly, it was a lot more straightforward than I initially thought. We ended up moving about $50k of that 401(k) into physical gold within a self-directed IRA. The paperwork was a bit of a pain, but nothing unmanageable.
It's only been about eight months, but I can already see the appeal. While my other investments have been a bit of a rollercoaster lately with all the market fluctuations, the gold portion feels like a nice, stable anchor. It hasn't shot up parabolically, which I wasn't expecting anyway, but it's held its value incredibly well. There's a certain peace of mind knowing a portion of our retirement isn't directly tied to the whims of the stock market. I’m thinking about potentially rolling over more in the next year or so, depending on how things go.
Anyone else have a similar experience where a spouse or family member convinced them to look into a Gold IRA? What were your initial reservations, and how do you feel about it now? I'm curious to hear other perspectives, especially from those who were initially on the fence like I was.
