My wife made me a believer in Gold IRAs - anyone else?

So, I've always been the numbers guy in our household, right? Spreadsheet King, budget master, the whole nine yards. My wife, bless her heart, is more about the big picture, the gut feeling. She came to me a couple of years ago talking about a Gold IRA. My initial thought was, "Honey, are you getting your financial advice from late-night infomercials?" I mean, I'm a principal, I teach financial literacy to high schoolers – I know about diversification, but physical gold in an IRA just felt... old school, like something my grandpa would do.
She kept at it, though. We live in Little Rock, and she had heard a few folks at her book club talking about it. She started bringing home articles, showing me charts (she even tried to explain one to me once, it was adorable). Her main point was that with all the inflation scares and just general economic uncertainty – which, let's be honest, has been pretty wild lately – having something tangible, something that isn't tied directly to the stock market, just made sense for a portion of our retirement. She called it our "peace of mind" investment. I was initially thinking about just sticking more into our S&P 500 index fund, but she was insistent.
Finally, I caved. We had about $75,000 sitting in an old 401k from a previous job that I hadn’t rolled over yet. I figured, what's the harm in moving maybe $50,000 into a Gold IRA? It wouldn't be all our eggs in one basket, but enough to satisfy her curiosity and, frankly, get her to stop sending me articles during dinner. And honestly? I'm so glad we did. Seeing what the market has done in the last year or so, and then looking at the performance of that gold portion... it really has provided a buffer. It's not going to make us rich overnight, but that stability feels good.
Now I'm the one telling my colleagues, "Hey, have you looked into precious metals?" I still crunch the numbers, but she definitely opened my eyes to a different type of diversification. Has anyone else had a similar experience where their spouse or a close friend really pushed them into investing in something they were initially skeptical about, and it ended up being a good move? I'm curious if this is a more common story than I thought.
