Been on this forum for a while, mostly lurking and soaking up all the great advice. Finally have something substantial to share. For months, I've been trying to convince my wife about moving a portion of our retirement funds into a Gold IRA. She's always been pretty traditional, 100% in stocks and bonds, and was super skeptical about "physical assets" in a retirement account. Every time I brought it up, it was like hitting a brick wall. We're in Austin, grew up with tech, and she just sees gold as this old-school, non-performing asset.
I kept showing her the charts, explaining the inflation hedges, and how it’s a way to diversify our 401k/IRA mix, especially with all the market fluctuations we've been seeing. Our portfolio is sitting around the $750k mark and my main goal right now is capital preservation and hedging against volatility. The thought of another 2008 or dot-com bust scares the crap out of me. I've been building this tech venture for years and I want to protect what we've earned.
What finally clicked for her was when our financial advisor (who's usually super conservative) even casually mentioned that having some exposure to precious metals could be a prudent move right now. I don't know if he saw the look on my face, but he basically validated everything I'd been saying. She came home that night and just said, "Okay, let's look into it seriously." HUGE win. We're thinking of allocating about 10-15% of our retirement, so probably around 75k-100k, into physical gold and maybe a little silver.
Feels like a huge weight off my shoulders to finally have her on board with this strategy. Anyone else have a similar experience getting a skeptical spouse to agree to a Gold IRA? What finally moved the needle for them? Now just gotta decide on the best custodian and types of gold to go with. Any recs for Austin-based folks or reliable national companies?
