Whew, okay, I finally did it. After probably two years of me bringing it up, my wife is actually on board with moving some of our portfolio into a gold IRA. Honestly, I was starting to think it would never happen. She’s always been pretty traditional with investments, mostly blue-chip stocks and some real estate, which I get. Our family wealth has been built on timber land for generations, so real assets are definitely in her blood, but gold felt like a bridge too far for a while.
I’ve had about $300k in a pretty standard brokerage account for a bit, separate from the bigger trust stuff, and I’ve been chipping away at moving a good chunk of that, maybe $100k-$150k, into something more tangible. Living out here in Spokane, you just see a lot more folks with tangible assets – land, equipment, commodities. The paper stuff feels…flimsier sometimes, especially with all the talk about inflation and market volatility lately. I just wanted some peace of mind for our kid's future, something truly generational.
What finally clicked for her was a combination of things, I think. First, she saw some of the numbers on long-term gold performance, especially during dips in the broader market. Then, bizarrely enough, it was when I showed her some of the actual physical coins. We went to a local dealer here in Spokane, and she saw the American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maples in person. Suddenly it wasn't just some abstract concept. She even started asking about the different designs and mints! Now she’s helping me research companies and even picked out a few designs for the portion we’re getting in physical coins. It’s pretty wild.
So, for those of you with skeptical spouses, what finally got them on board? Was it the numbers, the physical appeal, or something else entirely? Any specific resources or conversations that helped you bridge that gap?
